UNI Apro P&L Strengthens Cooperation Among Post and Logistics Unions in the Asia-Pacific Region
UNI Apro Post & Logistics Committee Meeting in Colombo discusses industry developments, challenges and the future direction of workers’ unions
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, 26 August 2026 — The UNI Apro Post & Logistics (P&L) Committee held its committee meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka today to discuss current developments in the post and logistics sector across the Asia-Pacific region, while strengthening cooperation among trade unions representing workers in the industry.
The meeting, held from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon Sri Lanka time, brought together leaders and representatives from the UNI Global Union network, particularly those involved in the post and logistics sector.
The meeting was chaired by UNI Apro P&L President Masami Adachi, who is also the JPGU President. The opening session was attended by UNI P&L World President Jan Simpson (CUPW), UNI P&L World Deputy President Jens Saverstam, UNI P&L Head of Department Cornelia Berger, and UNI Apro Regional Secretary Rajendra Acharya.
Solidarity with Sri Lanka’s Post and Telecommunications Workers
The opening session also provided an opportunity for representatives of the Sri Lankan trade union movement to deliver solidarity and keynote remarks.
Bro. Chinthaka Bandara, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Postal Telecom Services Union, delivered a keynote address highlighting developments and challenges faced by workers in Sri Lanka’s postal and telecommunications sectors.
The session reflected the spirit of international trade union solidarity, particularly in addressing the rapidly changing landscape of the postal, telecommunications and logistics industries.
Strengthening the Organisation
Among the key matters discussed were the roll call, adoption of the meeting agenda and various administrative matters relating to the UNI Apro P&L Committee.
The meeting also considered changes in the composition of UNI Apro Post & Logistics, together with the adoption of previous meeting minutes and the activity report.
These matters are important to ensure that the organisation’s structure, membership participation and programmes continue to be implemented in an effective and coordinated manner.
Focus on Global Trends in the Post and Logistics Sector
One of the key agenda items was a presentation on “The World Trend Surrounding the P&L Sector (2025–2025)” by UNI Post & Logistics Head of Department, Cornelia Berger.
The presentation was an important part of the meeting as the postal and logistics industry is undergoing significant transformation driven by technology, digitalisation, e-commerce, automation and changing customer expectations.
These developments have a direct impact on workers, particularly in terms of employment, skills development, productivity, occupational safety and the future of jobs within the postal and logistics industry.
Competence Centre and Sector Development
The meeting also discussed the Competence Center and Post and Logistics Sector, with the participation of UNI Post & Logistics Policy Coordinator, Loïc Verreman.
This area is considered important in strengthening trade unions’ capacity to understand industry developments and develop effective strategies to protect workers’ interests.
As the world of work continues to evolve, knowledge, data, technology and policy expertise are becoming increasingly important tools for trade unions to ensure that workers’ voices remain heard.
Preparation for the UNI Apro Post & Logistics Conference
Another important agenda item was the Outline of the UNI Apro Post & Logistics Conference.
The discussion is expected to form the basis for preparations relating to the content, direction and priorities of the upcoming UNI Apro P&L Conference.
The conference will provide an important platform for trade union representatives to discuss strategic issues affecting the postal and logistics sector, including industry developments, workers’ welfare, technological transformation, occupational safety and strategies to strengthen trade union organisations.
Next UNI Apro P&L Meeting
Under Any Other Matters, the committee also discussed the proposed date and venue for the next UNI Apro Post & Logistics Meeting.
Early planning is important to ensure continuity in the committee’s discussions and programmes, while allowing participating unions to prepare effectively for future activities.
Strengthening Workers’ Voices Across the Asia-Pacific
The UNI Apro P&L Committee Meeting in Colombo demonstrates the continued commitment of UNI Global Union and trade unions across the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen cooperation in the postal and logistics sector.
As the industry continues to undergo significant transformation, trade unions need to work together to ensure that technological developments and changing business models do not compromise workers’ rights and interests.
International cooperation also provides an important opportunity for unions to share experiences, best practices and strategies in addressing common challenges faced by workers across different countries.
The meeting was scheduled to conclude with closing remarks by UNI Apro P&L President Masami Adachi, before concluding at 12.00 noon Sri Lanka time.
The UNI Apro Post & Logistics Committee Meeting in Colombo was more than a platform for discussion. It served as an important forum for strengthening solidarity and uniting the voices of post and logistics workers across the Asia-Pacific region in preparing for an increasingly challenging and rapidly changing industry.

UPUS VOICE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, 26–27 August 2026 — The Union continues to make its mark on the international stage as the Kesatuan Pekerja-Pekerja Pakaian Seragam Pos Malaysia Berhad (UPUS) Semenanjung Malaysia participated in the 7th UNI Apro Post and Logistics (P&L) Conference held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
UPUS’s participation was led by UPUS President, Haji Ismail Haji Ali, who represented Malaysia at the conference. More significantly, he was also given the opportunity to deliver a presentation during a panel discussion session focusing on workers’ issues and current challenges in the Post & Logistics sector.
In his presentation, Haji Ismail brought the perspectives and experiences of Pos Malaysia workers to the international level, particularly on industry developments, workers’ welfare, the role of trade unions, and efforts to safeguard workers’ rights and interests in facing the rapid changes within the postal and logistics sector.
The participation also provided UPUS with an opportunity to share Malaysia’s experience in addressing industry challenges, while gaining new insights and approaches from trade union leaders across the Asia-Pacific region.
Also accompanying the UPUS delegation was UPUS Secretary-General, Haji Nikmatullah bin Abu Baka Citi. His presence further strengthened UPUS’s network of relations and cooperation with trade unions and Post & Logistics sector leaders from various countries.
The 7th UNI Apro P&L Conference served as an important platform to discuss the future of the postal and logistics sector, including technological changes, industry developments, workforce challenges, occupational safety, workers’ welfare, and the importance of strengthening the workers’ voice in addressing industry transformation.
For UPUS, participation at the international level is not merely about attending a conference, but also represents a strategic platform to bring the voice, aspirations and interests of Pos Malaysia workers to the international discussion table.
The presence of these two key UPUS leaders also reflects the union’s commitment to expanding international networks, strengthening workers’ solidarity, and building cooperation with trade unions from countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
As the postal and logistics sector continues to undergo significant changes, the workers’ voice must continue to receive due attention. Therefore, UPUS’s participation in this conference is seen as an important step in ensuring that the welfare, rights and future of Malaysian workers continue to be highlighted at the regional and global levels.
From Malaysia to Colombo, the UPUS voice continues to be carried onto the international stage.
This participation demonstrates that the struggle and voice of Pos Malaysia workers are not only heard at the national level, but have also found a place on the platform of Asia-Pacific and international trade unions.
